What is CSD GPS Ranger?
Developed by BarZ Adventures, the GPS Ranger is a handheld computer that uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to deliver on-site interpretation, including compelling video, audio, animation, maps and other pertinent information based on the location of the user. Utilizing the full-color video capabilities of the system, tours can be delivered in sign language and captioning to meet the needs of deaf or hard of hearing visitors. BarZ provides the hardware, software and content development skills, as needed, while Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) uses their expertise to create sign language interpreted video tours.

The GPS Ranger is small and lightweight, with a four-inch screen that is readable in full sunlight. For convenience, the unit includes a lanyard that can be worn around the neck or wrist. Each GPS Ranger also includes a quick reference guide that users can consult for assistance if needed.

GPS tracking allows location-based content to be triggered automatically when visitors approach specific outdoor destinations. The same location can trigger different information depending on which direction the visitor is traveling. For example, when the visitor starts a tour at point A, the Ranger can deliver a welcome message and when the visitor is returning to Point A at the end of the tour a “thank you for taking the tour” message can be triggered. While GPS triggering is only appropriate for outdoor locations, the visitor can also call up other information relating to indoor locations manually from the GPS Ranger menu.
Did you know that there are over
30 million people with hearing loss?
Ensure that your Deaf and hearing visitors can enjoy tours together equally!

Often tourists travel in mixed groups, which may include both a deaf or hard of hearing and hearing visitor. They may ask for accomodations for individuals with hearing loss. How would your staff respond?

By having a CSD GPS Ranger available, you can readily be prepared to address visitors with all ranges of hearing loss. You can ensure that all can enjoy a tour on the GPS Ranger. ASL tours are accompanied by audio for non-signing, hearing companions and many audio tours are accompanied by captioning – so everyone can enjoy the same tour at the same time and you remain in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act!
With GPS Ranger, you can
learn about your visitors
and communicate better.

CSD is helping to raise awareness of how to make public venues accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing population. CSD GPS Ranger Series is one way to integrate ASL and captioning into venues and tourist destinations. If you would like to add a Ranger Series tour in ASL or captioning or seek ways to make your venue accessible and meet your ADA requirements, contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you.
